Who is the service for?

Parents, carers or guardians with dependents aged up to 18 who are working with a local partner agency/Cluster, and are experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues.

Definition of mild to moderate

Someone with a mild to moderate mental health problem will have some symptoms that can make their daily life more difficult to manage than usual. They are generally able to manage everyday functioning but are negatively affected by their emotions/feelings/unhelpful behaviours. They would benefit from therapeutic support in learning how to manage these challenges. The service is not suitable for people in crisis or who have severe or complex mental health problems. Someone in crisis would not be able to manage the difficulties or challenges they face and may need specialist support.

Rediscover Counselling Service

Please note referrals for this service are currently closed due to capacity. We hope to reopen referrals later in the year and will update this page when we do.

What we will offer

An initial assessment to explore suitability for support followed by up to 12 weeks of one to one counselling support provided by a Counselling Student on placement who is supported and managed by a fully qualified and experienced therapist. The Well Being Wheel will be used during the intervention to help with goal setting and review progress.

As our Rediscover service is proving popular, we are running a waiting list of approximately 3 to 6 months to start sessions, after assessment. This is subject to change and we endeavour to offer counselling in a timely manner.

Aims

To help parents, carers and guardians deal with current or past emotional difficulties which impact them and in turn, their children and families.

How will it help

Parents, carers and guardians can use their sessions to:

  • Talk about their difficulties in a safe and supportive environment, free from judgement
  • Gain a better understanding of their problems
  • Address past and present experiences which are impacting their life
  • Work out what changes they need to make to improve their mental health/emotional wellbeing

Reclaim Counselling Service

Reclaim is a trauma-informed, long term counselling service that supports patients to make fundamental changes to their lives. It is commissioned by and delivered at the Armley Primary Care Network group of surgeries (Armley Medical Practice, Priory View Medical Centre and Thornton Medical Centre) by a counsellor working one to one with patients identified as most in need, and receptive to, this specialised service. Reclaim supports those who have experienced childhood trauma which is continuing to impact on them in adulthood and can offer up to 24 weeks of one to one trauma focussed counselling.

Through evaluation and client work, it is recognised that health issues repeatedly seen in GP and other health & wellbeing services have a common theme of childhood trauma. Our experience has also identified that people are facing challenging issues with their housing, relationships, finances and physical health, which have created problems in managing their mental health positively and Reclaim aims to support patients to make positive changes.

This service is for adults aged 18 and over and was developed from the work of Reclaim – a long running service funded for 9 years by the National Lottery delivering counselling and facilitated groupwork for the most disadvantaged communities in West Leeds which came to an end June 2022. To find out more about the wider Reclaim service, please see the evaluation report below.

The team have also developed a booklet for service users utilising tried and tested ideas and resources that people who were supported by our Reclaim service said helped them. This toolkit is designed to help people manage and improve their mental health and wellbeing. If you feel your service would benefit from this resource please email counselling@barca-leeds.org for more details.
