Wellbeing Hour

The Wellbeing Hour service helps young people and young adults who identify as LGBTQ+ who are struggling with their mental health to access therapeutic support.

Who is the service for?

This service is available for young people aged 13 to 18 and young adults aged 19 to 25 who identify as LGBTQ+ and live primarily within West Leeds.

Young people can refer themselves or professional referral can be submitted. Please complete the Barca-Leeds CYP Referral Form and send it to cypreferrals@barca-beeds.org

We aim to provide an environment where young people can:

  • Talk about their difficulties with real honesty in a safe and supportive environment, free from judgement
  • Gain a better understanding of their needs
  • Address past and present experiences which may be impacting their life
  • Explore their identity without fear of being judged

What we offer

Advocacy and mentoring

One-to-one support from a trained worker to explore any barriers or issues the young person is facing and offer practical / emotional support to help them address these and move forward. Delivery location can be flexible.

Counselling

Following an initial assessment to explore suitability for support, we will offer up to 12 weeks one-to-one counselling support provided by a counselling student on placement or qualified volunteer. These sessions will be delivered at Manor House in Bramley, Leeds.

What can counselling help with?

Counselling can help with current difficulties or with issues from the past which are causing problems, including:

  • Anxiety, Depression & low mood
  • Bereavement
  • Managing emotions
  • Low self-esteem, feelings of loneliness, guilt or shame
  • Relationship difficulties or breakdowns
  • Self-harm / suicidal ideation

Workshops

We deliver focussed workshops exploring a range of issues / topics that are led by the young people accessing the project. Themes may include strategies for positively managing emotions, self-care, improving life skills etc.

Wider support

The service is part of a wider offer which includes a social group where young people can come together with the support of qualified youth workers to access peer support, activities, emotional wellbeing support and advocacy. Young people will be supported to access the wider offer through partners as appropriate and signposted for additional provision to meet individual need.

BACP accredited service

All our therapists that work within our counselling services are fully trained and experienced professionals, or supervised students in some instances, and work in accordance with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) ethical framework. The team utilise a range of modalities. including (but are not limited to): humanistic, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, relational, integrative approaches, play and art based approaches.
